Q. What is the Hula Hoops Hoopathon?
Hula Hoops Hoopathon is the world record attempt being organised by United Biscuits (UK) LTD for the most number of people hula hooping at same time. The Hoopathon will take place at the sixteen flagship Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile cities. All Hula Hoops Hoopathons will start at midday sharp, and all participants will need to hula with their hoops around their waists for 2 minutes without dropping the hoop.
Q. How does participation in the Hula Hoops Hoopathon make a contribution to Sport Relief?
Entry fees for the Hula Hoops Hoopathon are the same as for the Mile and go towards staging the events across the country. Participants are encouraged to gain sponsorship just like with the Mile.
Q. Do you need to register online to take part?
Yes. There won’t be anywhere to sign up and pay the entry fee on the day so please sign up in advance.
Yes, you’ll need to sign up quickly though before we fill up! However if you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian to consent that you can sign up, and they will need to be with you on the day, to sign the World Record Log Book.
Q. Do I need to pay to take part in both the Hula Hoops Hoopathon and Sainsbury’s Event Mile?
The entry fee payable secures you a place in the Hula Hoops Hoopathon, and the Event Mile in the same city. The entry fee automatically signs you up for both the Hula Hoops Hoopathon and the Sainsbury’s Event Mile, but if you just want to join us for the hooping, that’s fine by us, we’ll see you at 11am! This fee goes towards the cost of running the events and also includes your own Hoopathon T-shirt and hula hoop.
Q. When will the Hula Hoops Hoopathon’s be taking place?
Hoopathons will take place at the sixteen flagship Mile cities at 12:00 on Sunday 21st March. If taking part you will need to arrive by 11am to sign the official World Record Log Book, collect your free hoop and T-shirt and take part in a warm up.
Q. Can my children take part?
Yes, yes, yes! As long as you can hula hoop (and are big enough to use our hoops) you can take part. However anyone under the age of 18 will need to have their parent or guardian with them on the day in order to sign the official World Record Attempt Log Book.
Q. I’m bringing my children, do I need to register each one?
We’ve made it much easier for you, rather than individually registering each member of your family, you can sign up the whole family (2 adults and 2 children) all at once – and make a saving as well!
Q. Where can I find more information?
You’ll find more information regarding hula hooping, the Hoopathon, and how to register, at hulahoops.com (how to register page). You’ll also find details on how Hula Hoops are helping Sport Relief at sportrelief.com/partners.
Q. What happens if it rains?
You might get wet! Be prepared for our classically unpredictable British Weather. The record attempt will go ahead rain or shine and we need you!
Q. Where will the Hula Hoops Hoopathon be taking place?
In most of the cities we’ll be in the main Sport Relief registration area – however it will be clearly signposted at the main congregation point or just ask any of the Sport Relief Team and they’ll be able to point you in the right direction if we’re a little further away.
Q. I just want to sign up for the Hula Hoops Hoopathon, why am I being asked to enter a mile?
Your entry fees gets you a place in the Hula Hoops Hoopathon, AND the Sainsbury’s Event Mile in the same city. However if you don’t want to run, you can just join us for the hooping but please keep your mile number safe as you’ll need this to register for the Hula Hoops Hoopathon.
Q. I don’t want to run the Sainsbury’s Event Mile – who do I tell?
You don’t need to tell anyone if you don’t want to run. The entry fee automatically signs you up for both the Hula Hoops Hoopathon and the Sainsbury’s Event Mile, but if you just want to join us for the hooping, that’s fine by us, we’ll see you at 11am!
Q. What do I need to be ready to Hula Hoop?
As with all sports you should thoroughly warm up before taking part. We will be taking you through a warm up on the day before the record attempt, but make sure you stretch properly before and after hooping.
Q. What do we need to do to set a new World Record?
We need a minimum of 1,000 people hula hooping simultaneously for 2 minutes across the UK, this means at least 100 of you at 10 locations. All Hula Hoops Hoopathons will start at midday sharp, and all participants will need to hula with their hoops around their waists for 2 minutes without dropping the hoop.
Q. What happens if I drop my hoop?
Don’t worry! If you drop your hoop while hooping, we just ask that you sit down until the 2 minutes is up, so you don’t knock those who are still going. However this does mean you will not be counted towards the World Record attempt.
Q. It’s been ages since I hula hooped – can I still join in?
Of course! We want everyone to have fun hula hooping – just be aware that if you do not manage to hoop for 2 minutes, you will not be counted towards the record attempt. Why not have a practice in the meantime, check out the vodcast on the Hoopathon News page for more tips and pointers
Q. Can I or do I need to bring my own hula hoop?
To comply with all the Guinness World Record™ regulations, everyone needs to be using the same hula hoops – so we’ll be providing hoops for you all on the day, you can take it home too!
Q. Do I get a free Hula Hoops Hoopathon T-Shirt?
You certainly do, it’s the perfect memento of your day
Q. Does my entry fee count as a donation?
Your entry fee goes towards staging events across the country. You will also receive a Hula Hoops Hoopathon T-Shirt and a hula hoop as a memento of your day. As the entry fee only goes towards staging the events, please get your friends and family to sponsor you to raise money and change lives.
Q. If we set a new record, will it appear in the Guinness World Records™ Book?
Each year approximately 65,000 enquiries are made from people wanting to set or break records. However, they can only publish around 4,000 records in the book each year, so an editorial decision is made as to which records will be included. If our Hula Hoops Hoopathon record isn’t selected for publication on this occasion, there's a chance that it may be included in future editions, it may also appear on the website.
Q. If we set a new record, will the record appear on the website?
There are more than 30,000 record categories in the database, and only a proportion of these records can feature on the website. Guinness World Records currently house about 3,000 records online, but are adding more every week, so make sure to check the site regularly to see if we make it on there!
As one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives. All the money raised helps people living incredibly tough lives - both at home in the UK and across the world's poorest countries.
